Lack of success by Japanese stars opens debate about next wave - Tom Verducci - SI.com

Aoki has drawn some comparisons to Suzuki for his style of play, though he has not been that kind of impact player. Other than Suzuki and Matsui, many position players from NPB have been less than advertised as major leaguers despite major financial investments, including infielder Kaz Matsui ($20.1 million for three years), catcher Kenji Johjima ($24 million, three years), outfielder Kosuke Fukudome ($48 million, four years) and Nishioka ($9.25 million, three years).

One talent evaluator said the track record of such players has been so poor that his club devalues NPB players at least one level from their established level in Japan, saying, "If you're looking at everyday position players you probably think of them as fourth outfielders or utility players for the most part. Whatever role they had there, we downgrade and then see if that's a fit for us."

- Can I talk about MLB?

サンプルは、U.S.S.

Rob Johnson’s Catching | U.S.S. Mariner

この記事でのU.S.S.

U.S.S. Mariner

Felix: 27 PA, .638 OPS
Bedard: 56 PA, .448 OPS

Washburn: 68 PA, .608 OPS

Felix: 56 PA, .702 OPS
Bedard: 22 PA, .747 OPS
Washburn: 12 PA, .000 OPS
Silva: 51 PA, .836 OPS
Jakubauskas: 17 PA, .639 OPS
Rowland-Smith: 20 PA, .733 OPS
Morrow: 15 PA, .500 OPS
Aardsma: 15 PA, .298 OPS

Batista: 13 PA, .615 OPS
Kelley: 4 PA, .500 OPS
Lowe: 7 PA, .452 OPS
White: 0 PA, NA(登板なし)

Rob Johnson(シーズン終了時点)

ローカル紙では、Seattle Times、U.S.S.Mariner、SPI、そしてMariners Insider、Pro Ball NW(旧 Bleeding Blue and Teal)など。

Game 161: Kenji Johjima's last start?
Mariners Insider - » Game 161: Kenji Johjima’s last start? The News Tribune Blogs, Tacoma, WA

Every season there are farewells to be said to the players we've watched, whether they ride off into their own sunset or are traded away.

This season is no different and the focus has been on veterans like Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Sweeney - but three good catchers is one too many for most teams.

The Mariners have rookie Adam Moore, Rob Johnson and Kenji Johjima, and Johjima has two more years left on his contract. Still, there is some thought that the Mariners might try to buy him out gracefully and send him home to Japan.

That's a long shot, but anything is possible, so tonight could be Joh's last game as a Mariner. If so, he's going out on a roll - batting .309 over his last 16 games with five doubles and three home runs.

Joh-K’s Outlook(ジョー・Kの前途)
by Jon Shields
http://www.proballnw.com/07-2009/joh-ks-outlook/

What to do with Kenji Johjima?
He’s not the starting catcher anymore. Rob Johnson has won over the pitching staff and more importantly manager Don Wakamatsu, catching whenever Felix Hernandez, Jarrod Washburn or Erik Bedard take the hill. He’s even been hitting since the calendar turned to July, batting .300 with a .900+ OPS.

Johjima is under contract through 2011 and set to be one of the highest paid catchers in baseball over the next two seasons, but getting playing time is only going to get harder for him. Adam Moore, the organization’s top catching prospect, has continued hitting since landing in AAA and is just a few months of defensive work away from being MLB ready.

Will Johjima give up and go back to Japan? He has an opt-out clause in his contract that can be exercised after the 2009 season. It’s supposed to be reserved for family emergencies or other similar developments, but if he goes into 2010 Spring Training as the third string catcher behind Johnson and Moore (and not to mention Jeff Clement), might he find a way to exercise that clause and head back to Japan where he can find a starting job and play closer to his family?

Or maybe he simply approaches the team asking to work out some kind of buyout? The Mariners could pay him something like $10M in exchange for his retirement. Just a thought.

I mention those options first because I’m having a hard time thinking of a team that would want him in trade. The offense has slipped and there are surely rumors around the league about his inability to work effectively with a pitching staff. The Red Sox have been a popular target of speculation, but with Theo Epstein leading one of the most intelligent front offices in baseball and the Julio Lugo bad contract swap possibility a few days from going out the window, they don’t seem like much of a destination for Johjima.

The Yankees could use a catcher, have money to burn and could market Joh alongside Hideki Matsui to their large Japanese demographic, but would they want Johjima? Not likely, but they’re the first real possibility that springs to mind.

As funny as it is, the Royals match up on a couple of levels. They love hackers like Johjima and have Trey Hillman managing, but money would be an issue and Miguel Olivo is outperforming Joh at the plate this year.

The Giants seem like a possibility, but Buster Posey isn’t long for the minor leagues so I don’t think they’d be eager to add an expensive catcher for the next two seasons. Who else could be a possibility? The Phillies?
50 Buster Posey
Buster Posey Top 50 Prospects Profile | MLB.com: Minors

The last options would be to either release Johjima outright and eat the $16M owed to him after this season, or allow him to stick around as the league’s most expensive backup for the next couple of seasons.

I’m getting of tired of rehashing these ideas every few months. I really hope the situation is resolved this offseason. What would you like to happen with Johjima? What do you think will actually happen?

He can't hit, can't field, can't run.(打てない、守れない、走れない)というのは、明らかにこのブログのタイトルキャプションのもじりのような気がしてならないのだが、気のせいだろうか。

SPI(Seattle Post-Intelligencer)

But Wakamatsu's biggest personnel headache looms: What to do with Kenji Johjima.

The veteran has been supplanted as starting catcher by rookie Rob Johnson, who has won over Felix Hernandez, Jarrod Washburn and Eric Bedard. They are the starters primarily responsible for the Mariners leading the American League in earned run average, and all insist on throwing to Johnson.

Johjima, whose two stints on the disabled list opened the door for Johnson, is upset, going as far as having a closed-door meeting with Wakamatsu.

"I think I won't look back (on the first half of the season)," Johjima told Japanese reporters Sunday. "If I hit .300, had recorded more caught-stealings, and the team had won more, I would catch more games. As a player, I have to think so."

The baseball numbers speak loudly in Johnson's favor: With him as starter, the M's are 24-16 with a collective ERA of 2.93. Johjima is 13-19 and 4.91.
城島は13勝19敗、CERA4.91。

But the financial numbers speak on behalf of Johjima: He is in the first year of a three-year, $24 million extension signed last year in a deal that former GM Bill Bavasi indicated was forced on him by ownership.

Wakamatsu is nearing an awkward crossroad in which his baseball agenda could clash with his bosses' agenda. But Wakamatsu's agenda must prevail, because he's helping end a half-decade of mishap and misery by standing tall with the facts.

To reinsert Johjima would be a clubhouse disaster. Already prevailing against assorted injuries to win five of nine recent road games against the best in baseball, then recovering from two bad games against Baltimore to handle Texas, the Mariners border on giddiness.

"We're really close to doing what Tampa Bay did last year," said closer David Aardsma (save No. 20 Sunday), referring to the unexpected American League championship by the Rays. "We're pitching well, we score when we need to and we're making good defensive plays."

We're not quite ready to witness to the Ray way, but Sunday was a testament to Aardsma's point. The Mariners yesterday featured a re-jiggered lineup of five guys hitting below .250 -- catcher, shortstop, third base, left field, DH. Somehow, it worked.

9. KENJI JOHJIMA
It's probably a tad unfair to blame one person for how bad the dysfunctional 101-loss Seattle Mariners were this year, but Johjima, if nothing else, was a primary reason GM Bill Bavasi got fired. The M's catcher will soon become their most overpaid player after, incomprehensibly, he was given a three-year, $24 million extension that begins in '09 - despite the fact their best prospect, Jeff Clement, is also a catcher. In '08, Johjima was a complete disaster. He hit .223 with a .272 on-base pct. and a .322 slugging pct. - all of which was compounded by the fact that the Mariners' pitchers hated pitching to him. (For the record, one of them, Carlos Silva, held the distinction of most overpaid Mariner in '08, earning $8.2 million to go 4-15.)

2. JOHN MOORES
3. ANDRUW JONES
4. ED WADE
5. IAN SNELL

7. DRAYTON McLANE
8. MARK REYNOLDS
9. KENJI JOHJIMA
10. ROGER CLEMENS

AL LVP: Kenji Johjima, Mariners

What do Andruw Jones and Kenji Johjima have in common? If there was a way to spend the same money on building a time machine, both their teams would rather build it, head back about 10 months and take a mulligan on these contracts than try to figure out what to do with these two poster boys for expensive disappointment.

Johjima's three-year, $24 million extension didn't make much baseball sense at the time, anyway, considering the Mariners' best prospect (Jeff Clement) was a catcher. But now it looks like a worse investment than Enron stock.

There were 124 AL hitters who got 350 at-bats this season. Johjima ranked 119th in on-base percentage (.272), 119th in OPS (.594), 118th in slugging (.322) and 114th in batting average (.223). Now add in all the issues he had with assorted members of his pitching staff, and this was a vintage LVP kind of year. Oh, by the way, did I mention that his three-year extension doesn't even kick in until next season?

OPS(.594)第119位

例えば、「皮肉のごまかし」はespecially if he has previous success against the starting pitcher.

Not many teams in the Major Leagues carry three catchers on their active roster before September

Not many teams in the Major Leagues carry three catchers on their active roster before September callups.
Then again, not many teams with a $116 million payroll get mathematically eliminated from playoff contention with more than a month left in the season. Just consider the Mariners unique in a number of areas this season.

With Kenji Johjima, Jeff Clement and Jamie Burke all splitting time behind the plate, manager Jim Riggleman has been forced to implement a three-pronged strategy in determining who will catch, who will be the designated hitter and who will sit.

None of the players have particularly made a case to stay in the lineup with their ability to consistently hit, so Riggleman has been forced to take into account other factors before he makes his decision.

"There's a lot of variables in there," Riggleman said.

When a left-hander is on the mound -- which has been the case more often than not against the Mariners over the past few weeks -- the nod will likely go to Johjima, especially if he has previous success against the starting pitcher. Though Johjima was 0-for-3 lifetime against the Indians' Jeremy Sowers heading into Friday night's game at Progressive Field, the 32-year-old Japanese catcher was penciled in behind the plate while Clement was at designated hitter.

Clement's hot bat of late has made it tough for Riggleman to leave the 25-year-old rookie on the bench. Since Clement finally cracked the Mendoza line (a .200 batting average) Aug. 8, he is batting .341 with six doubles and nine RBIs, which has helped lift his average to .229. Expect Clement to be in the lineup more as a DH in the next few days, as "his knees have been barking a little bit," Riggleman said.

When the Mariners face a right-hander, it's almost guaranteed that Clement, the only left-handed batter of the trio, will be in the lineup in some fashion, leaving the other spot up for grabs.

"It's about taking those three things into consideration and making a choice," Riggleman said.

He also is clearly unhappy with his role today.

What Do You Do With A Catcher Like Johjima?
http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/mariners/2008/07/09/what_do_you_do_with_a_catcher_like_johji

Burke is a solid backup who's out of options. He can't be sent to the minor leagues. Clement is the catcher of the future, according to the Mariners. And Johjima?

The worst-kept secret in baseball is that pitchers don?t like throwing to Joh, and this dates back years. When John McLaren managed, he tried to protect Johjima from criticism, but Jim Riggleman is in charge now.

And Johjima's time behind the plate has been cut severely.

Instead, Johjima , who signed a three-year extension in April , has done a little DHing and a little watching from the bench. Offering him the lucrative extension was not a baseball decision, but one that came directly from Japan.

Now Seattle has to figure out what to do about it. Joh is untradeable with three years on his deal. He also is clearly unhappy with his role today.

It?s an issue that's going to be troublesome the remainder of the season and probably beyond.

It might be a coincidence, but catcher Kenji Johjima signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension on April 25, a deal that was not well-received in the clubhouse. Most starting pitchers preferred throwing to backup receiver Jamie Burke, although left-hander Erik Bedard was the only one to get his wish.
The Mariners were 11-12 and three games out of first place on the day the deal was announced. They are 14-35 since, 17 1/2 games behind the division-leading Angels, and Johjima has been replaced behind the plate by Jeff Clement.

Johjima can't school Bedard on how to hold a 5-0 lead.

For those of you who missed it last night, here's our latest Mariners road trip video, chronicling the journey from Seattle to Arlington, Texas:On to some thoughts about the baseball team...

Forget about catching the Angels, who came back to win last night and snap a four-game losing streak. Don't worry too much about the Oakland A's, now 8 1/2 games up on Seattle after this latest Mariners loss, a 13-12 stinker to the Texas Rangers last night. Yeah, it would have been a feel-good win had Brandon Morrow managed to keep striking out everybody in sight. But the reality is, the M's were outscored 12-3 between the bottom of the first until the top of the ninth. A win in this game would have been a gift from the Baseball Gods.

But forget the Rangers, A's and Angels. The biggest foe this Mariners team is fighting right now comes from within its own clubhouse. And for all the calls I've seen for the ouster of manager John McLaren in recent weeks, some well-reasoned, others bordering on the ridiculous, these coming days will be a true test of his leadership abilities. McLaren alluded to it slightly in yesterday's pre-game session with reporters, about how "little things'' in the clubhouse had to be dealt with before becoming bigger. The manager suggested at the time that his staff had moved to quell any small brush fires and that the team was more together now. I'm not so sure that's the case.

Yes, there have been some team meetings. This team, if nothing else, is excellent at holding meetings. But that alone won't do it. You get the sense walking through that clubhouse that it is more of a collection of individual groups than one team streaking towards a common goal. Every clubhouse has its cliques, but for the M's, this is always going to be a particular challenge strictly because of the natural language barriers that exist. You glance around the clubhouse on any given day, you'll see the young relief pitchers off in one corner, the two middle infielders in another, sometimes holding court with Carlos Silva and Felix Hernandez, other times with Miguel Cairo. Miguel Batista will be off by himself. Jarrod Washburn and Erik Bedard, sometimes, in another corner. Ichiro off doing his own thing, which will usually involve intense pre-game stretching. Kenji Johjima off by himself. Cha Seung Baek off by himself. Adrian Beltre doing his own thing, though he'll also socialize with the middle infielders. Richie Sexson holding court with Willie Bloomquist and sometimes Jamie Burke.

There will be interminglers between the groups. J.J. Putz spends plenty of time with the young relievers, trying to help them feel as comfortable as he can. Putz is one guy who can roam freely around the clubhouse interacting with all the groups I just mentioned. Silva is another, who, despite Spanish being his first language, seems comfortable interracting with everyone. Raul Ibanez can do it as well. But this clubhouse will always have its challenges. And now, with 12 losses in the last 15 games, those challenges look more serious than ever.

It's not about everybody getting together and baking cookies on Sunday. All teams have their internal divisions. But the Mariners, as uniquely as they've been constructed, with more interpreters hanging around the clubhouse than players immediately after some losses, have some natural divisions already built-in. The addition of others during the course of a season can therefore become more problematic than usual.

This whole thing brewing with catcher Johjima is just the latest test. The Mariners are moving quickly to downplay any suggestions of a rift between the catcher and the starting staff. Jarrod Washburn said last night that he's had trouble getting on the same page with catchers before -- Bengie Molina in Anaheim being one -- that it's nothing new and that adjustments constantly have to be made.

That may be so in his particular case. If it's only a matter of week-to-week adjustments between Johjima and Washburn, then it can be remedied and is not that big a deal. But then the Mariners have to move swiftly to address the situation and get everyone on the same page before a deeper rift forms. Erik Bedard and Johjima looked hopelessly out of sync last night. It was the first time the pair had teamed up in a while after three successive outings with a Bedard-Burke battery.

McLaren said yesterday that the decision to bring in catching coordinator Roger Hansen, starting today, to get his pitchers and catchers in sync, was made before anyone even asked Washburn about his relations with the catcher.

Johjima can't school Bedard on how to hold a 5-0 lead. He can't stand on the mound for six or seven innings in Washburn's place. Or fill in on nights when good Felix Hernandez becomes bad Felix Hernandez. But there have been numerous critiques about Johjima's catching style since he arrived here. The Mariners have worked extensively with him to alter that style. His ability to throw runners out improved last year, with some help from pitchers who began slide stepping more and getting him the ball quicker.

Johjima's framing of pitches has also been an issue on a team where walks have been dispensed like candy the past few years. The M's walked 13 batters last night to only one for the Rangers. While the wind did indeed wreak havoc with some pitches, it works the same way -- as some of you mentioned -- for both teams.

There have been murmurs of discontent in the clubhouse, since I arrived here in Sept. 2006 anyway, about how Johjima sets up behind the plate and the target he offers pitchers. The M's have taken steps to correct that issue as well.

How much should this impact pitchers on the mound? It will, to a degree. Not to the point where they should be blowing 5-0 leads like vintage Horacio Ramirez. But it obviously will have some type of impact if pitchers are less than comfortable with the guy they are throwing to.

How serious an issue is this? I think very. The way this clubhouse is structured, with several guys more or less an island unto themselves, the possibility of brush fires erupting into a full-out chemical blaze is omnipresent. Johjima isn't surrounded by a half-dozen pals at the card table in the pre-game hours. He and Ichiro don't even intermingle all that much.

He is an easy target for discontent. An easy scapegoat for a season heading down the tubes. And while a lot of the disenchantment towards his catching style may be valid, it's not even the truth of it that matters. It's the perception. The image created going forward. His ability to instill confidence in the pitchers he catches. According to the M's, he's going to be here a long time. Seattle just signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension with a catcher in his early 30s who owns an on-base-plus slugging percentage of .562. There continue to be whispers in the organization that the extension decision was made by the Japanese ownsership and was not the idea of a front office that had used a No. 1 draft pick on catcher Jeff Clement a few years ago. The M's, as always, don't like to talk much in public about the reasoning behind such personnel decisions. They keep their explanations at surface level in press conferences and hope everyone moves along. Whatever. Again, it won't be the truth of it that matters in the clubhouse. It's the perception.

When Johjima was hitting in 2006 and 2007 -- like he did with last night's game-tying bomb in the ninth -- a lot of his defensive style could be grudgingly overlooked by a team winning more and more games. But with his offensive numbers now among the worst in the major leagues, on a team headed nowhere fast, eveything else he does behind the plate will fall under intense scrutiny. That's human nature. Frankly, at his age and with the money he just received, he should expect nothing less.

But McLaren and his staff have their work cut out for them with this and other situations. This clubhouse, already not among the most together in the majors, is primed and ready for one of these brush fires to blow up into something huge. At this stage, the firehoses should be pointed in Johjima's direction. Next week, it could be something new.

Winning cures a lot of these problems. But the Mariners aren't winning. And if McLaren wants to continue having a shot at winning with these players down the road, he'd better make sure the flames of the Johjima situation don't start licking their way towards him.
