ボストン戦の連勝で日本のファンにはあいもかわらないのんびりムードが漂っている。だが、もちろん地元のメディアには、打率.220程度の城島がたまたま何試合かぶりにヒットを打っただけで鬼の首をとったかのように、意味もなく喜ぶ馬鹿な空気はない。
それどころか、この5月にはまだ試合があり、7勝19敗の今はまだ「月間20敗」という、球団始まって以来の不名誉な記録がかかっているからである。
下記の記事によると、この記録は過去1992年9月(6勝20敗), 1989年8月(9勝20敗), 1983年6月(8勝20敗), 1980年8月(8勝21敗), 1978年9月(7勝21敗) 、そして歴史上最悪の月間記録である1977年8月(6勝22敗）と、６回記録されている。

みてもらえばわかるように、過去の記録は大半が8月から9月の、ポストシーズン前の記録である。つまり、ポストシーズンの行方が決まって気が抜けてからの記録であって、過去のシアトルの歴史に「5月に20敗した」という記録はないのである。
つまり、城島は「最も早い季節に月間20敗を招いた球団初の正捕手」という称号を得るかもしれない、ということなのだ。

How badly did the Mariners need those last two wins against Boston?
Well, by taking those games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Red Sox, Seattle is 7-19 for May with two games to play.
No matter what happens in the last two games of May against the Tigers Friday and Saturday, Seattle can't finish with the worst calendar month record in club history.
That record, dating back to the franchise's first season, was a 6-22 August.
This doesn't get the Mariners off the hook -- the May record already includes more losses than any May in club history.
For the record, the last 20-loss month for Seattle at any point was in June of 1998 (8-20).
Other 20-loss months for the franchise include September of 1992 (6-20), August of 1989 (9-20), June of 1983 (8-20), August of 1980 (8-21), September of 1978 (7-21) and the all-time worst month, August of 1977, the franchise's first season, when the summer doldrums led to a 6-22 record.
